In need of some vitamin sea? You've come to the right place!
With summer in full bloom, vacationing is inevitable. Yet, the down side to traveling is the toll that it takes on your immune system (and physical appearance). Want to keep healthy and maximize your R&R experience? Consider preparing your immune system by taking supplements before vacay (and after because, duh).
Vitamin C is key to a natural healthy immune system boost. Not only is Vitamin C abundant in fruits and vegetables, but it is also helpful if taken as a supplement. A healthy dose of powerful antioxidants does a body good! (Try a smoothie with kiwi or orange for a Vitamin C pick-me-up!)
Supplemental Vitamin C not only supports strong immune function, but may also lessen the duration of symptoms of a common cold! The recommended Vitamin C daily allowance for women over the age of 19 is 75 mg per day. At times of illness, or under conditions of increased stress (such as traveling), the body can use greater amounts (up to 200-250 mg per day).
Vitamin D (AKA the "sunshine vitamin") is also a must-have for your pre-travel ritual. It is essential for strong bones, because it helps the body use calcium from the diet. Vitamin D is produced by the body in response to skin being exposed to sunlight. Additionally, it occurs naturally in foods such as fish, egg yolks, and dairy products.
During the summer months, catch some rays for approximately 20-30 minutes two to three times a week. This should be enough for a fair skinned person to make the Vitamin D they need. When spending extended amounts of time in the sun, make sure to lather on sunscreen!
Want to feel and look your best on vacay (um, who doesn't)? If so, biotin is your go-to vitamin supplement.
